Greetings Good ASPers,
Please know that the Cohasset ASP Board has been thinking about you all lately in the midst of this pandemic and we hope that you are all well and hunkered down making the best of a bad situation. We pray that this message finds you and your family healthy.
As the news reports have told us, the mitigation response by all for COVID-19 crisis is ever evolving and the great focus has been on flattening the curve of transmission. I am sure you have been wondering what this pandemic may mean for our Trip. We have been in contact with the great staff at Appalachia Service Project in Tennessee the past couple of weeks and they have been consulting with National and States officials as well as groups like ours. Ultimately, they have made a very difficult decision to suspend the summer volunteer program for 2020 until August 1, 2020.
This means that effectively the summer program will not occur this year, but they will continue to help ease substandard housing in Central Appalachia through their year-round program and look forward to coming back in the Summer of 2021 in a big way. The major force for the decision is simple. ASP should not be responsible for possibly bringing this dreaded disease to the families we would serve, many of whom are already at health risk and in areas where the health care facilities are not as top notch as they are where most of our volunteers reside.
We will have more details to follow in coming days as the Board is able to process this decision more fully.
We are terribly sorry to give this disappointing news but know that this is the correct decision to protect the families we serve, the staff at ASP, and ourselves at this difficult time in history. Please remember that like Brother Gentry, we are here for you for any needs or questions and hope that you are well and remain safe. Know that you are loved.
on behalf of the Board of Directors of CASP:
Phil Lehr, JoAnne Lehr, Matt and Caitlin Fithian, Barbara and Janet Hoyler, John Chapman, Jack Dane and myself.
